Matted pet hair can become a serious problem!
Mats pull tightly on the pet’s skin, causing them constant discomfort and sometimes suffering. But even more serious is the fact that air cannot circulate through the hair and skin, which can lead to major skin irritations and infections.
As a highly trained professional, your pets groomer/stylist understands how serious matting is and what health consequences your pet can suffer as the result of matting. He/she will evaluate the condition of your pet’s coat and recommend what is best for him/her.
The solution…
When a pet’s hair becomes severely matted, there is simply no way to remove it except to give the pet a very short haircut, often referred to as a “smoothie”.
What is a “Smoothie”?
A smoothie groom is very time consuming, as the groomer must use extreme caution as he/she removes the tightly matted coat from your pet. You don’t just shave the hair off. It is much more involved. Your groomer uses specialized equipment to separate the matting from the pet’s skin. It is incredibly difficult and delicate work to release your pet, inch by inch, from the hairy prison surrounding him/her.
Great care must be taken. As the matting is removed, it may reveal skin conditions, parasites, or even foreign objects imbedded in the pet’s hair. The skin can become unhealthy under matting, sometimes to the point that immediate medical attention is needed.
Be an informed pet parent
Before you buy, adopt, or rescue a dog, be aware of its grooming needs. Keep in mind that all dogs require grooming to some degree. You will need to spend time and effort on your dog’s maintenance in conjunction with the services of a reputable groomer. Double coated breeds such as Shelties require extensive brushing/combing to maintain their long drop coats and are prone to matt quickly without regimented care. Dog’s with skin issues or parasite infestations require specialized care. Nails must be trimmed on a regular basis and teeth need care as well to prevent tartar buildup. Your professional groomer can advise you on how to groom your dog between visits and make recommendations. Consider how much time you are able to dedicate to your pet’s care and how willing you are to do the brushing as well as the more unpleasant tasks. Oftentimes a salon experience is the solution to properly care for your pet’s grooming and related services.
